NURSES, THE DOOR TO BETTER HEALTH CARE
In every area of life, communication is required. Communication between bosses and employees, husbands and wives, children and parents is essential. In a time of sickness or extended illnesses, communication between the patient and the nurse is paramount. It is the nurse, if he or she is a good communicator who helps the patient understand what the doctor is saying. Because Mike, my husband of thirty two years spent approximately fifty days in the hospital and continues to make countless visits to doctors offices, I've learned what it takes to have less complications during a hospital stay, or to have a successful visit with the doctor. The answer lies in positive contact with the nurses. For us, nurses brimming with good communication skills were the best nurses we encountered. They were the ones who took time to explain what to expect, clarified what some of the unfamiliar terminology meant and communicated clear instructions. They did not assume just because they knew what was to come, we knew and understood. During Mike's hospital stay, we appreciated the nurse's explanations when the doctors left us with more questions than answers. Those displaying genuine compassion and concern toward our particular situation were the ... [more..]

IMPROVES CHILDREN’S HEALTH CARE PLAN
The plan, which passed with bipartisan support, bolsters our national defense, allows additional funding for children's health care and increases support for our veterans.
This blueprint for America's budget is an important milestone because Congress was unable to pass a budget in three of the last five years. This budget:
-- Improves children's health care by expanding funds available to the State Children's Health Insurance Program.
-- Invests in education by increasing funds for No Child Left Behind and Pell grants.
-- Creates a deficit-neutral $20 billion reserve fund to increase funding for energy, disaster assistance and commodity support in the next Farm Bill.
The Bush administration said Saturday that senior advisers would recommend the president veto Senate legislation that would substantially increase funds for children's health insurance.
The legislation calls for a 61-cent increase in the federal excise tax on a pack of cigarettes. The revenue would be used to subsidize health insurance for children and some adults with incomes too high to qualify for Medicaid but not enough to afford insurance on their own. Members of the Senate Finance Committee brokered a bipartisan agreement Friday that would add $35 billion to the program over the next five years. The Bush ... [more..]
PHYSICAL TREATMENT AND HEALTH CARE OPTIONS
The last few years have seen a change in physical treatment and health care options. The patient can now have a certain amount of say in what type treatment they wish to receive should they become unable to communicate. Advanced directives can be placed in a patient's medical record that will protect that patient from certain conditions.
Some people have a terminal condition that will eventually lead to their death. With this knowledge the patient has options as to what kind of physical treatment and health care they wish to receive. Medical professionals are required to sustain life for as long as possible. This means that should you become incapacitated, any medical personnel that you come in contact with will be obligated to use whatever means available to keep you alive. For some this may mean extended life on a life support system. Advanced directives, also known as a living will, can spell out your wishes and allow the medical personnel to honor them.
What Questions Need To Be Considered?
If your medical condition is terminal you might want to sign an order known as a DNA (do not resuscitate). This means that medical personnel can withhold physical treatment and health care in ... [more..]
