
by: Subha Ekambaram Health care is one of the few recession-proof fields. The Department of Labor projects that there will be an increase of 4,700,000 new health care jobs in the next five years. There are many professions in the allied health industry (does not include doctors and nurses) that are rewarding and easy to enter into. The following is an examination of some of these jobs. Physician Assistants Physician assistants are formally trained and perform health services delegated by a physician. They perform basic duties of diagnosing illnesses and performing routine examinations. Education Requirements: Physician assistants must complete a two-year accredited education program. A national exam must also be passed in order to obtain a license to practice. Medical Assistants Medical assistants perform clinical and administrative duties. They can be trained to take vital signs, weigh and measure patients and obtain medical histories. Education Requirements: Most medical assistants complete either a one- or two- year post-secondary program. Health Technologists and Technicians There are numerous careers in this field, some of which include cardiovascular technologists, ultrasound technicians, respiratory therapy technicians, surgical technologists and clinical laboratory technologists.
